Check first, and safe grown-ups.

A simple rule that keeps kids safe: check with my grown-up first before I go anywhere or take anything, and know who my safe grown-ups are.

More ways to teach the rule

What to expect

Instead of teaching fear of strangers, which is confusing because most people are kind and helpers can be strangers, teach the check-first rule: ask your grown-up before going anywhere with anyone or taking anything. Pair it with knowing two or three named safe grown-ups. A clear rule beats a scary story, and it works even with people the child knows. Teach the difference between a surprise, like a present kept for a little while, and a secret that feels bad: those always get told, even when the person asking is family or someone the child knows. You know your kid.

Common questions

What if my child won't look at the schedule or story?

That is common at first. Leave it where the moment happens, point to one picture at a time, and keep it low-pressure. Many kids warm up to it after a few calm tries, in their own time.

Do I need an account?
